“My work consists mostly of wheel thrown forms – simple and functional, sometimes slab built or thrown and assembled, shapes developed to combine with my glazing techniques. Using salt and ash glazed stoneware I explore unconventional firing processes, experimenting and developing my combination of purpose built and re-cycled kilns. At the moment I am firing a radically modified 1970’s Cromartie electric kiln, now with gas, pushing the boundaries of traditional industrial salt glaze to enrich my pots. Vibrant slips and ash glazes are applied in multiple layers to encourage the firing process to leave their mark on the ware. During the firing process textures and movement happen within the fluid glaze, producing unique and complex flowing, textured and feathered glazes to be explored beyond their surface. Every firing has an element of unpredictability as the boundaries of the materials are pushed to their limits, seconds are minimised but accepted within this process – with every kiln opening successes are counterbalanced with the occasional failure.

Exhibiting widely across the UK and Europe, I attend many ceramic shows, events and symposiums where I enjoys being part of an international community of potters. I also serve as a director of the International Ceramics Festival, held biannually in Aberystwyth. Recent projects have included completing two architectural ceramics commissions making a salt glazed shop fascia and interior for a restaurant in Fulham – producing a modern interpretation on the areas historical link with salt glazing.

I graduated from the Harrow Studio Ceramics course in 1991 and then had a shared workspace space at Kate Malone’s Balls Pond studios in London before returning to work as a technician and studio manager on the Harrow ceramics course. In 1997 I moved to West Wales to set up a studio on a smallholding where I have continued to develop my work and firings for the past 23 years.”
