During this workshop you will create your very own wearable rosette brooch, with colourful yarns and grid material donated by Jones Bros. You will learn to wrap and weave threads, ropes and yarns into the triangular grid to create rose-shape designs and tassels that can be worn.

Artist Stories Series

Following on with the theme of ‘Materials’ we have invited a different artist / maker each week throughout August to share their artist story with you! What is Craft? Who Does it? Why do they do it? The programme for each of the 4-day residencies will be tailored according to the nature of the artist’s practice but will offer a series of open access events such as workshops, talks, demonstrations and drop-in activities for all ages.

Andy Hazell – Metal, 6 – 9 August:
Andy has maintained his careers as an ‘Automatist’, a Public Artist as well as a maker of short films. Throughout his career he’s experimented with mechanical sculpture and became an Automatist creating animated tinplate figures, museum collection boxes and props for Film and TV companies. Andy’s practical skills have led naturally on to creating durable, site-specific works for the public realm. He has become a skilled fabricator who is able to create almost anything; making work for other artists, as well as his own.

Catrin Howell – Clay, 12 – 16 August:
Catrin creates lively animal sculptures inspired from the surrounding countryside and founded on legend, myth and fantasy. She is renowned for her portrayal of wild beasts and creatures that capture the imagination.

Robert Race – Wood, 20 – 23 August:
Robert has been a full-time maker for over thirty years and his work covers a wide range, from dolls’ houses and moving toys for children and adults to automata, kinetic sculpture and exhibition design. He tries to make things which move in simple but interesting ways. His moving toys and simple automata incorporate a wide range of natural, re-used and recycled materials.

Bella May Leonard – Textiles (Embroidery), 27 – 30 August:
Bella’s practice celebrates embroidery as a contemporary art form. Emphasising hand stitch as an accessible, expressive art; she creates sculptural work that uses traditional hand stitch techniques with easily recognisable materials such as electrical wire.

Catrin Howell Craft Club for

Working in clay, participants will create mythological animals and story based pieces with Catrin. The work made during the sessions will be fired and returned to the Craft Centre at a later date for collection.

All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Robert Race Studio event

Throughout the four days Robert will be working on some new pieces of work in a variety of materials, including driftwood and other found materials. A hands-on display will include some finished work and a selection from his collection of moving folk toys from around the world.

Bella May Leonard Open studio

Using embroidery stitches, wrapping, knotting and weaving techniques Bella will be embellishing polyfelt cut-out shapes and stringing them together to give the effect of a necklace. There will be a specific selection of colours, inspired by a Mexican textile embroidery. These pieces will then be attached to decorate large Mexican creatures. Every hour Bella will give a short demonstration of the different stitches that she will apply to her polyfelt pieces and explain the process along the way.

Andy Hazell Drop-in session

Andy will be cutting and folding and soldering biscuit tins to make models of small Welsh towns. Drop in to try the technique from 1.00pm each day.

Tinsmith Andy will be in the studio all day giving demonstrations of the techniques needed to transform the humble biscuit tin into something less round and useful.

Andy will be ‘in residence’ cutting and soldering tinplate to make small buildings and landscapes inspired by North Wales. In the afternoon he will talk about making one’s way in the crafts world and the transition to being a ‘Public Artist’.

Material Attack – what will you make?

To celebrate the last weekend of our ‘Artists Stories’ summer series we would like to invite everyone to come along and join Bella and the Ruthin Craft Centre learning team for a jam-packed 2-day weekend of making; using all sorts of different materials to create a massive installation piece in the courtyard.

Catrin Howell Drop in

Throughout the afternoon Catrin will share her skills and take you through each process of making an animal head with the material of clay.

Catrin Howell Master-Class

The workshop with Catrin will involve transforming a story from mythology, into a 3 dimensional sculpture in clay. The young people will use a variety of hand building techniques to create their sculpture. You are welcome to bring stories and reference materials along. The work made during the sessions will be fired, and delivered back to the Craft Centre at a later date for collection.
